What is an MSN Family Nurse Practitioner?

Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) are clinicians who blend clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management. FNPs bring a comprehensive perspective to health care.

The University of Cincinnati’s (UC) Online FNP program prepares nurses to diagnose and manage common and complex medical conditions across the lifespan, from children to the elderly. The University of Cincinnati Online’s MSN FNP program meets the needs of working nurses, with many of our students choosing to work while completing their degree. The online UC FNP program is designed for BSN-prepared nurses interested in advancing their careers through roles that have a greater impact on patient care, and gaining the knowledge required to become leaders in their field and integral members of their community. Program graduates meet the criteria for taking both the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) and AANP (American Academy of Nurse Practitioners) certification exams.

Licensure

Graduates are eligible to sit for ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) or the AANP (American Academy of Nurse Practitioners) certification exam.

FAQs

How long do your Nursing programs take to complete?

Each Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program can be done in as little as two years. There are additional options available for several programs that allow students to take these programs at a slower pace. Although these options extend the length of the selected program, they often make it a more feasible option for the student.

The Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program is a part-time program built to be completed in as little as four semesters, or one year and four months. The Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner program has no set time frame due to the extremely customizable nature of the curriculum.
Can I work while completing this program?

Yes. The vast majority of our students work throughout their time in their academic program. It is important to assess course load and financial aid to understand how to balance school and work.

If possible, students may cut down on their work hours during a clinical portion of a program.
Is Federal Financial Aid (Title IV) available?
Yes. Many of our students qualify for some type of financial aid.
